A Skyscraper’s Health Check

Soaring 342 feet above the bustling streets of Baltimore, 100 HarborView Drive is a city icon. This 29-story building, the 16th tallest in the city, stands as a proud centerpiece of the HarborView complex. Built in 1993 on the bones of Bethlehem Steel Shipyard’s graving dock, it has industrial roots.

Knowing that even giants need a checkup, HarborView’s management called in the building inspection experts at BECS. We were tasked with giving this towering resident a thorough once-over, from its head-in-the-clouds façade to its subterranean garage. Think of it as a full-body MRI for a skyscraper.

Our specialized team of Façade Access Support Technicians (FAST, if you’re in the know), was up for the challenge. With ropes and safety gear as tools, they inspected every inch of the building’s exterior. From the intricate brickwork and mortar to the weather-beaten seals, they navigated a maze of different façade types, materials, overhangs, and architectural quirks.

Working at such heights presented its own set of challenges. High winds, unpredictable weather conditions, and limited access points on the roof threw us some curveballs. We hung tough, literally, for two days, completing 15 drops to get up-close views. This hands-on approach not only saved time but also eliminated the need for costly swing stages, beams, weights, and labor.

With regular check-ups, this sky-high resident is set to enjoy a long and prosperous life.
