Air leakage and performance testing.
If your building is leaking air, then it’s not performing to its max. This is costing building owners and managers money as they spend more on energy. BECS brings the expertise you need to evaluate drafty and leaky buildings through air and thermal testing.
The Benefits of Air Thermal Scanning
Thermal scanning allows us to see where temperature fluctuations may be present. These fluctuations can indicate where air and water may be leaking and provide information on poor-performing components. Air leakage testing may involve pressurizing a component to draw through in a manner where we can see and identify through infrared, smoke, or bubbles.

WUFI Technology
…for calculating the coupled heat and moisture transfer in building components.
Recently, our experts have been utilizing WUFI Technology. What is WUFI, you ask? In technical terms, WUFI is a German acronym that stands for “Wärme-und Feuchtetransport instationär”. This translates in English to “Transient Heat and Moisture Transport”. We use this software to calculate the coupled heat and moisture transfer in building components. WUFI software achieves realistic calculations of the transient hygrothermal behavior of multi-layer building components exposed to natural climate conditions. (Hygrothermal = Heat + Moisture)
WUFI Projects
In real-world practice, BECS has two WUFI projects with Architects for buildings in Philadelphia, PA. The first is a new construction project for a new building where they are analyzing different insulation options for wall systems. BECS provides feedback and recommendations on the differences in hygrothermal performance between options.

The second project is a retrofit of an old Navy barracks re-purposing the mass masonry wall building into a hotel, adding air and vapor barriers, insulation on the inside (looking at performance differences in different insulation options), and new interior walls with different finishes.
