A Landmark of Elegance
Opened in 1902, the Belvedere was Baltimore’s first contemporary skyscraper hotel, heralding a new era of large-scale commercial development in the Mount Vernon neighborhood. Today, it proudly stands as a Baltimore City Landmark, commanding attention from its prominent position on the southeast corner of North Charles Street.
This stunning 11-story tan brick structure reaches a height of 188 feet, a testament to its architectural significance. In 1991, the Belvedere was transformed into luxurious condominiums while preserving the historic grandeur of its interior spaces. The building’s magnificent ballrooms, restaurants, and lounge areas continue to be accessible to the public, allowing visitors to experience its timeless elegance.
A portion of the building’s ornate sheet metal cornice unexpectedly detached and fell to the ground. BECS’s team of engineering consultants swiftly responded, utilizing rope access to rappel from the roof for a close inspection of the cornice. They devised a stabilization plan that included securing loose facade elements with netting as an alternative to a full facade restoration, given budget limitations. Due to the horizontal extension of the multi-story mansard roof, swing stage access was not feasible. CAN USA, a contractor specializing in rope access, was engaged to execute the required stabilization work.
